Don't forget to bring your reusable bags to the Farmers Market this year!
In support of the City of Iowa City's on-going sustainability efforts, single-use plastic shopping bags will no longer be provided by Iowa City Farmers Market vendors. Farmers Market staff encourage patrons to bring their own bags, baskets, or boxes to carry their goods.
To help launch this new policy, the Iowa City Farmers Market has purchased 1,500 cloth bags which will be given away at the first few markets, while supplies last. After these are gone, the market will sell bags for $3 each at the information table.
What’s wrong with plastic bags?
Supporting a sustainable food system is not just about the food, it's also important to have sustainable options for packaging the food. Plastic bags are one of the most widely used products in the world, however only 1 to 4% of bags in the U.S. are recycled (Center for Urban Education and Sustainable Agriculture).
In March 2016, Iowa City was awarded a 4-STAR Community Rating for sustainability excellence, by being formally certified in the STAR Community Rating System.
The decision to disallow single-use plastic bags not only aligns with the goals of the City of Iowa City as a STAR community, but also with the mission of the Iowa City Farmers Market to provide an educational forum for consumers to learn the uses and benefits of quality, locally grown or prepared food products while supporting the Iowa City area's sustainable food system.
The Iowa City Farmers Market is a program of the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department.
Chauncey Swan Park Farmers Market, 405 E. Washington St. Operates the beginning of May to the end of Oct. Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m. Saturdays, 7:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
Join the Iowa City Public Library as we celebrate UNESCO International Jazz Day from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30, in Meeting Room A, with “Jazz in the Fight for Civil Rights: Jazz as Activist Music.”
During the Civil Rights movement, many musicians joined African-Americans in using their musical voice as a catalyst in demanding change in America. While popular artists such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and James Brown were more overt in voicing their opposition to the status quo through their music, the more subtle sonic contributions that jazz musicians made to this righteous cause are often overlooked.
Through a combination of live performance, spoken remark and a visual presentation, “Jazz in the Fight for Civil Rights: Jazz as Activist Music” will highlight three of the more prevalent examples of jazz music’s alignment with the African-American fight for civil rights and the backstory behind their creation. Musicians featured include Dr. Damani Phillips from the University of Iowa on saxophone and vocals; Steve Shanley from Coe College on piano; Blake Shaw, a graduate student at the University of Iowa on bass; and Jim Dreier of the University of Iowa on drums.
This event is co-sponsored by the Iowa City Public Library and the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature. For more information, call the Library at 319-356-5200.
